A couple of weeks ago I sent out a newsletter describing the season we’re in – Spring. I decided to share it on my blog because it’s such a good reminder for everyone that Spring is a time of new beginnings, new adventures, and possibilities – plus I have a yummy recipe at the bottom I thought you might like to try. Ok, this is what I wrote:
Spring is in the air – so juicy and alive….what will your day be like today?
Every new day brings an opportunity for something new…. to create new habits, to reinvent your routine, or to make a commitment to yourself. What will you commit to today? What opportunities will you seek? What changes will you make? What new ideas will you give birth to today?
Whatever you decide, every morning is an opportunity for change. We do not need to commit to or seek BIG changes, just small baby steps that will lead us towards synchronizing our body and spirit with the rhythm of nature.
Today, let’s begin our day with a very simple lesson on Kapha season (the Ayurvedic terms that stands for wet and earthy), in other words, Spring.
For those of us on the East Coast, we are in full Spring mode. The temperature is mild and as I’m writing this newsletter on my porch, I can hear the early morning rain – the sound is so beautiful and nourishing – water is life. In the Ayurvedic world, spring is considered Kapha season because it is a ‘wet’ time of year. The environment feels earthy, grounded, fertile, juicy, alive – full of Shakti.
With the heavier, more humid environment, we may feel more grounded, our skin may feel warmer and moist, and we begin to desire lighter, greener foods. Kapha season could also bring the dreaded mucus buildup or spring allergies and increased sluggishness. Nature has us covered, though, providing an array of food choices to counteract any imbalances we may be experiencing.
Kapha season requires more greens and less cooked meats and grains. This is the time of year to increase your intake of sprouts, legumes, greens of all types (in particular dandelions, spinach, & asparagus), and low glycemic fruit such as berries (which are in season, of course).
I’ve included a delicious berry smoothie that is perfect for this time of year. My adrenal enhancing smoothie is low glycemic, can improve your energy, and provide an abundance of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, proteins, and healthy fats. Try it as a post work-out smoothie or as a meal substitute this morning.
To Make:
1 cup raw coconut water
1 large organic cucumber
1 cup frozen organic blueberries
1 tablespoon chia seeds
large handful of sprouts of choice (such as sunflower sprouts)
1 tablespoon coconut oil
raw honey to taste
Top with shredded coconut (optional)
(You can also add 1 scoop of your favorite vegan plant based protein powder or 1 tablespoon Spirulina).
I also want to let you know what I’m up to this year: This September, I will be launching my 10 week pilot program, ‘Healthy Evolution, Body Thrive Program’, based on my training with Cate Stillman of Yogahealer.com. I’m so excited about this program and how it can impact and enhance your health and your life. More details will be provided as we get closer to September, but if you have worked with me before and are interested about finding out more, please email me so we can chat. (annette@cynyoga.com).
PS – the number of available spots is dwindling away…
Much love, health, and happiness this spring season and beyond!
