My favorite herbs for a healthy digestion

My favorite herbs for a healthy digestion

It’s officially fall, Vata season, and this can bring a host of digestive issues such as gas, bloating, constipation, and a feeling of heaviness.

If you’re a fiery type, a Pitta constitution, the end of a hot summer and the beginnings of fall can increase heart burn or frequency in bowel movements.

This is why I love Ayurveda, because if you know your tendencies there are remedies and preventative measures you can take right NOW, to prevent any digestive discomfort that fall brings.  When your agni (digestive fire) is working properly (not too high, not too low), your health and immune system will be preserved and strengthened.  If you ignore impending digestive discomforts, you’ll end up sick.

Remember….disease begins in the gut.

I love this blend for simply maintaining steady agni (digestive fires):

In a stainless steel pot, add equal parts of fennel, coriander, and cumin seeds and dry roast them over low heat until they turn brown and you can smell the aromatic qualities of the herbs.  Chew on these herbs between meals to maintain a steady agni.

Below are additional herbal recommendations that increase agni (digestive fire); some are warming and some are cooling.

In general, if your tendencies are towards a Vata or Kapha imbalance, you would need to consume warming herbs, such as the following:

  • Ginger
  • Black Pepper
  • Cinnamon
  • Cloves
  • Salt

If your tendency is towards a Pitta imbalance, you should consume cooling herbs, such as the following:

  • Fennel
  • Coriander
  • Peppermint
  • Chamomile

Herbs have an intelligence and a life force that can communicate with your own individual cells to ignite healing and balance – in particular, herbs that have been dried, have a more concentrated and powerful effect than fresh herbs.
